Hot air on the river, smell of sunscreen and engine fuel mixed with the breeze from the reeds. Went alone and spent half the boat ride just sipping a cold Efes from the tiny bar on board and watching the Rock Tombs slide by. The beer was not cheap, but after the mud baths it felt perfect, sitting in wet swim shorts and salty skin drying in the sun. Iztuzu Beach was crowded yet quiet enough to drink a simple Turkish tea and listen to the waves. Only downside: the coach back to Fethiye felt a bit packed after a long, hot day.

Booked this last minute as part of a larger group and it turned out to be one of the calmer days of our autumn trip. Future travelers, if you enjoy meeting people as much as seeing places, this day out is really enjoyable. Our group on the coach from Fethiye felt relaxed from the start, and by the time we were on the Dalyan River boat everyone was chatting and sharing sunscreen and towels like old friends. The guide used humor to get strangers talking, especially while we passed the rock tombs and tried to photograph them without standing in each other’s way. The mud baths were hilarious; we ended up helping each other cover every patch of skin, then comparing our grey faces in the mirrors. Iztuzu Beach in late spring was warm but not too crowded, and a few of us walked together to the quieter end for a swim. The only downside was a short wait at the pier while boats were organized, but it actually gave us time to talk more. Our guide Ali set the tone straight away with clear info on what was included and what would cost extra, which I really appreciated.
